Mike Grant is a Detroit-based DJ, producer, and owner of Moods & Grooves Records, whose career has helped shape the global sound of house and techno. Active since the early 1980s, he was part of the WJLB “Street Beat” radio show alongside Juan Atkins and Derrick May, became the first American DJ to hold a residency at Berlin’s legendary Tresor Club, one of the first DJs to have their mixes played for dancers on TV (WGPR’s The Scene including Jeff Mills), and has been featured in the Detroit Historical Museum’s “Techno: Detroit’s Gift to the World” exhibit.While serving 40 years in the U.S. Army, Grant continued to build an international music legacy and received a Testimonial Resolution from the City of Detroit recognizing his outstanding contributions to music and culture. His iconic track “The Struggle of My People” was included in Resident Advisor’s Best Electronic Records of 2000–25, affirming Grant’s lasting global impact. As founder of the influential Moods & Grooves record label, his work remains deeply rooted in Detroit and respected worldwide.
Moods & Grooves Recordings is an iconic Detroit-conceived independent record label founded in 1999 by DJ, producer, and dance music originator Mike Grant. The label’s identity is rooted in its name—moods for the soul and grooves for the body—a philosophy that allows space for emotional depth, rhythmic power, and stylistic range within underground dance music.From its inception, Moods & Grooves has focused on presenting distinctive music for both listening and dancefloor pleasure. The label balances sophistication and deep expression with rhythms designed to move bodies through force and subtlety. This dual identity has allowed it to grow beyond borders, building connections between Detroit and underground scenes across the globe.Since launching, Moods & Grooves has remained one of Detroit’s most consistent independent labels, earning respect through long-term planning, artistic integrity, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Its catalog reflects both legendary and emerging talent, helping to introduce new artists while maintaining the city’s musical legacy.With listeners spanning from local neighborhoods to international dance floors, the vision of Moods & Grooves is simple and expansive at the same time: wherever there is a listener, the music will find them.
Who I am:I’m retired from the Army, having served 40 years as both a Soldier and a civilian; my faith in God shapes how I move through life.I’m into photography, hiking, cycling, and all things tech. Music is my life, always playing in the background - every genre has a place - through DJing I've been able to travel across the globe, connect with people, and share experiences. I enjoy cooking and discovering great food from all cuisines.I value family deeply, I’m a loyal friend, I enjoy dressing well, and I don’t shy away from life’s challenges. I’m always working on being a better version of myself while enjoying the journey along the way.
